We can offer to enrich the isolation of your own office, by connecting you with an active, supportive and stimulating worldwide community.

Imago offers the opportunity for you to excel at couples therapy. Really good couples therapists are rare, so they naturally attract more couples. That means not only more clients for your practice, but many of these are able and willing to pay private fees without the hassle of reimbursements and managed care.

How does Imago couples counseling make working with couples into such a rewarding and successful experience?

Imago delivers breakthroughs.

It can be so exciting when a couple who seems caught up in their pain, suddenly breaks through to a new realization which brings happiness and love. This is the true heart of Imago marriage counseling, where it’s the couple who take ownership for their own work, and are therefore much more open to those “Ah ha” moments that create results.

Imago provides a framework for clinical practice.

You can use Imago to more effectively apply all your existing skills and experience. Imago interventions usually have the couples facing each other, and speaking directly to their partner, using structured dialogue processes which you guide them through. This supports the skillful and attuned use of prompts which guide the couple to safely explore issues like attachment wounding together.

Through Imago, couples take ownership for their work.

Do you ever find yourself with couples who get stuck in the process? Maybe you wish they could grasp what is so clear to you, and overcome their resistance? Imago invites couples to understand the couples counseling process so they can feel more motivated to explore their own barriers to growth. When your couples attend Imago weekend workshops, they often return with so much insight and enthusiasm that the next few sessions are full of excitement and discovery.

Additional requirements:

  • Attend a “Getting the love you want” couples workshop with your partner
  • A Masters degree or higher in Psychology, Social Work or Pastoral Counselling is a prerequisite for this training. (You can attend this training if you do not qualify, but there is no certification)
  • 7 supervisions sessions need to be attended, the 7th will be your certification supervision.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss childhood stages of development and wounding as well as resulting characterological adaptations in primary relationships.
  2. Discuss the concept of the imago and the role it plays in partner selection and subsequent stages of adult relationships.
  3. Discuss the concept of the imago and the role it plays in partner selection and subsequent stages of adult relationships.
  4. Work with a couple’s resistance, flow with it and keep volatile couples in dialogue
  5. Demonstrate dialogical skills to assist couples in restructuring conflict and frustration, resolving adult and childhood rage, bringing them into a healing relationship, and guiding them from unconscious to conscious relating (moving hem from reactivity to intentionality).
  6. Demonstrate skills to assist couples in increasing validation and empathy and achieve a deeper level of commitment and intimacy.
  7. Focus on their own personal characterological growth and thus be more able to deepen client’s affect, getting them in touch with childhood pain, and thus helping them find healing in the adult intimate relationship.
  8. Empower couples to continue the work of healing after therapy is terminated.

Participants are required to submit DVDs of their clinical work throughout the training program
During Level I of the training two tapes are required for supervision purposes. One of these tapes will be of a couple using the Imago Dialogue, another of a couple using the Behavior Change Request (BCR) dialogue process. At this stage the trainer will be looking for proficient use of the process steps set out in the “Getting The Love You Want” workshop manual.

During Level II of the training, several tapes may be requested of your clinical work, which will be used to provide feedback on your application of Imago processes.
After a minimum of 6 months of consultation, you may submit a tape which will be evaluated as the final stage in your Certification. In this tape we will be looking for the following:

  1. Demonstrating good technical use of an Imago process. The process used should be either the Imago Dialogue or the BCR dialogue
  2. Demonstrating proficiency in seamless flow, and portability of skills
  3. Achieving outcomes during the session, including transforming negative energy to positive, deepening connection, and meeting the couple’s childhood needs.

Certification Permissions:

Graduates of this track are eligible to represent themselves as Certified Imago Therapists®. They may advertise themselves as such and may practice Imago Relationship therapy in their practice.
They may present at conferences and various meetings up to four hours in length and may demonstrate the Intentional Dialogue and the Flooding of Admiration in public. They may use this designation for all speaking engagements and will be referred to as Certified Imago Therapists® during speaking engagements conducted by the Institute.

The course is offered in two sections.

  1. Level I is a 96 hour (12-day) training program which is usually completed in three sessions, each 3 days long. The training takes place at Ducks Country House. We recommend strongly that you stay in. Hours of each day is from 9am-20:00pm. The sessions are scheduled over a 6 to 9 month period, to enable trainees to practice with clients and prepare tapes.
  2. After completing the 12 days, trainees join Level II, which is based around a 6 month program of supervision, which prepares for submission of a final clinical video tape for evaluation, as well as written reports.

Level II trainees are welcomed as members of Imago Relationships International and are listed on the website.
